Who’s In? An Update

•

Once again the indispensable Shawn Shieh, who maintains the NGOs in China website, has published a helpful post on the implementation of the Overseas NGO Law, complete with lists and analysis.

Here are a few key data points from his post:

  1. The total number of overseas NGOs that have registered is 69.
  2. Fifty-two of those NGOs are located in three cities—Beijing (28), Shanghai (14), and Guangdong (10).
  3. In addition, overseas NGOs have successfully registered in Sichuan, Jiangsu, Gansu, Guizhou, and Jiangxi.
  4. One faith-based organization (MSI Professional Services) has registered in Sichuan and Yunnan. MSI does poverty alleviation work.
  5. In terms of sector/field, 62 of the 69 registered NGOs are in the categories of development (37) and economics/trade (25).

Please take the time to read Shawn’s post. It provides a very interesting snapshot of where we are five months after the law went into effect.
